The Project

The main aim of this project is to provide space to social actors to intervene collectively (Turkish and Greek Cypriots together with one voice) and in an organized and co-ordinated manner (within the framework of structured process) in the course of the future solution of the Cyprus problem. Our objective is for
Turkish and Greek Cypriots together with one voice to intervene in the peace building and the solution of the Cyprus problem within the framework of a structured dialogue related to social and economic cohesion in a future united Cyprus.

The project consists of various activities which have a modular structure and are in consecutive relation to each other:

1.    Production of a Framework Document. This document is a study on how economic and social cohesion is safeguarded and promoted in federal state structures. The document discusses international practices and develops a draft model for Cyprus. It outlines the framework for the thematic discussion conferences.
2.    Forming of the social actors’ network. The network consists of various social organisations from the wide spectrum of the country’s economic and social life (trade unions, consumer organisations, organisations of persons with disabilities, women organisations etc.) The applicant and co-ordinator organisation together with its partners constitute the core network or the steering committee of the network.
3.    Convention of thematic conferences. On the basis of the framework document several thematic conferences have been convened. In these conferences, participants (representatives of organisations participating in the network) deliberated on a given thematic area related to economic and social cohesion. The output of each conference was a thematic “memorandum” unanimously adopted.
4.    Dissemination of outcomes. The network disseminates its products within various activities (publications, upload in the internet, dissemination in social media, press conferences, handing over of memoranda to the negotiators and the community leaders).

The project team produced the Framework Document, which was thought to facilitate the main activities of the project. The document was not subjected to negotiated changes within the social actor’s network. It was just a working paper to encourage discussion as well as to structure the dialogue within the network.

In a second step, the co-ordinator and the partners of the project proceeded to the formation of the Social Actor’s Network.

The actual work of the project was carried out in the action related to the Thematic Conferences. The table below presents the seven Thematic Conferences that took place under this Project.
