“Gender Equality and Combating Discrimination in the envisaged unified Cyprus”
On 12th of June one more Thematic Conference took place under this project. The conference dealt with gender equality and combating discrimination in the envisaged unified Cyprus. It was held at Merit Hotel, Nicosia. The conference was opened by Mehmetali Güröz from KOOP-SEN who gave the welcome speech. It included two sessions. The first concerned gender equality in the envisaged unified Cyprus and the second one was about combating discrimination. The first session was chaired by Sevgül Uludağ from DEV-İŞ & Stelios Efstratiou from DEOK. The key note speaker was the sociologist and FEMA activist, Doğuş Derya. She presented a speech on gender equality in the envisaged united Cyprus. The speech was followed by two key discussants: Flora Giagkou, Promotion & Research Officer of DEOK and Doğuş Derya. The session was completed with interventions by participants. The second session concerned combating discrimination. The key-note speaker of this session was Aristos Tsiartas, Antidiscrimination and Human Rights Expert, who spoke about combating discrimination in the envisaged united Cyprus. The speech was followed by the two key discussants, the lawyer Öncel Polili and the researcher at INEK-PEO, Dr. Loucas Antoniou. The session was completed with discussion. The conference resulted to the adoption of a memorandum presenting the common understanding and expectations derived from its proceedings.
