Meeting of the Social Actors Network on the Completion of the Thematic Conferences

Thematic Conference (19/03/2015)

“Freedom of Association and the right to collective bargaining in the envisaged unified Cyprus”

                        

                        

The First Thematic Conference of the project was titled “Freedom of Association and the right to collective bargaining in the envisaged unified Cyprus”. It was held on March 19, 2015 at ETKA/PEO building in Nicosia. The conference was opened by the General Secretary of PEO, Pampis Kyritsis who gave the welcome speech. The conference included two sessions. The first session was about freedom of association in future Cyprus and was chaired by Glafkos Hadjipetrou, Genreal Secretary of PASYDY and Ahmet Varoglu, representative of KTAMS. The key note speaker was the Senior Liaison Officer of ILO for Greece and Cyprus, Constantinos Papadakis. Mr Papadakis presented a speech in which he described the basic principles of Freedom of Association as a universally recognized right, what it includes and what are the challenges in this regard. The session continued with the presentations of the two key discussants: the economist and consultant Hasan Sarica and the member of the Executive Committee of PEO and ex Minister of Labour and Social Insurances, Sotiroula Charalambous. The second session concerned the right to collective bargaining and was chaired by the Deputy General Secretary of SEK, Andreas Matsas and the representative of TURK-SEN, Erkan Birer. The key note speaker was once again Mr Papadakis from ILO who made an introduction to collective bargaining and explained its definition, its benefits, the role of ILO regarding the right to collective bargaining etc. The key note speech was followed by the interventions of the two key discussants of the session, Hasan Sarica and the SP Secretary of PASYDY, Andreas Louca. At the end of each session a discussion took place. The conference resulted to the adoption of a memorandum presenting the common understanding and expectations derived from its proceedings.
